Job Description

JOB  SUMMARY

Essential Job Functions
  • Assists the Regional Business Manager and the Regional Director with the preparation, monitoring, analysis and ongoing revision of the multi-year regional budget.
  • Support business manager functions in an effort to develop internal talent for a succession plan.
  • Assists the Regional Business Manager in the development and implementation of reporting tools and methodologies, primarily in the area of finance, to support decision making within the region.
  • Assists the Regional Business Manager in the provision of financial leadership and training support for missionaries engaging in strategic and tactical planning.
  • Assists the Regional Business Manager in the initiation and facilitation of effective process links with partner churches, local authorities and agencies, and other regional business managers.
  • Assists the Regional Business Manager in the oversight of the acquisition of foreign national support in the regional business office; as required by the RBM, supervises local volunteers/hired participants in the mission.
  • Assists the Regional Business Manager in the stewardship and management of LCMS properties and holdings within the region.
  • Assists the Regional Business Manager with oversight of corporate governance of entities as necessary and ensuring all regulatory and statutory reports are filed on a timely basis.
  • Assists the Regional Business Manager with ensuring that employees act in compliance with local tax requirements.
  • Works with regional leadership to orchestrate the effective implementation of program facets; assists in identifying resources to meet regional and global objectives.
  • Assists the Regional Business Manager in the management of the field accounting system and with the set-up and oversight of subsidiary systems in countries as required.
  • Assists the Regional Business Manager in the custodianship of all monies, bank accounts, stocks and other financial papers of region; facilitates all approved regional disbursements.
  • Maintains connections to US congregations and supporters through periodic newsletter publication and arranged visits to Together-IN-Mission (TIM) congregations during US-based home service.
  • Performs willingly other duties as assigned by the Regional Business Manager.
  • Additional coverage to other regions if needed.
  • Expectation of regional travel.
Education and Experience
  • An active member in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod or any of its partner churches.
  • Experience and proven knowledge of fund accounting, internal control, international finance and congregational treasury functions.
  • Experience working in an international or cross-cultural context.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Advanced training with 3-5 years of accounting/finance experience preferred.
  • Managerial/supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Intentionally, through on the job training and/or a continuing education plan, acquires the skills required to perform all essential job functions of the Regional Business Manager within two years of foreign deployment.
  • As need or opportunity arise, the Associate Regional Business Manager willingly considers the possibility of relocation to a different world region to assist or become a Regional Business Manager.
  • Expert understanding of accounting principles and procedures, capable of effectively and efficiently managing multiple priorities, quickly evaluating complex issues and identifying resolution.
  • Able to balance empathy with data-orientation; inclined to protect process and personal integrity.
  • Strength in qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Oriented toward big-picture goal attainment with an understanding of tactical requirements.
  • Able to maintain performance expectations in diverse cultural contexts, psychologically stressful environments and physical hardship conditions with limited resources.
  • Ability to understand global conditions and differences; able to relate and work effectively within varied, nuanced cultures.
  • Evidenced maturity of skills and proclivity for discretion.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated communication skills to include verbal and written, attentive and active listening, critical thinking, advising and counseling.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365.
  • Ability to learn a relevant language of the region preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 25% of the time and to complete one month of home service in the US every two years.
Supervisory Responsibility
  • Supervises selected local staff as assigned.
  • Complex coordination of tasks with non-direct reports/deployed team members and staff within the IC
